چکیده

The strain, stress and strain energy density of a vanadium dioxide (VO2)-based microactuator were obtained from experimental curvature measurements as a function of temperature. The study revealed fully reversible strain and stress changes of up to −0.32% and −510 MPa, respectively, and a maximum strain energy density of approximately 8.1 × 105 J/m3 through a temperature window of only 15 ◦C. The method for obtaining the strain energy density in this work is more accurate than the ones presented

Maximizing the performance of photothermal actuators by combining smart materials with supplementary advantages

The search for higher-performance photothermal microactuators has typically involved unavoidable trade-offs that hinder the demonstration of ubiquitous devices with high energy density, speed, flexibility, efficiency, sensitivity, and multifunctionality. Improving some of these parameters often implies deterioration of others. Photothermal actuators are driven by the conversion of absorbed opti...

Modeling and Inverse Compensation of Nonmonotonic Hysteresis in VO2-Coated Microactuators

Vanadium dioxide (VO2 ) undergoes a thermally induced solid-to-solid phase transition, which can be exploited for actuation purposes. VO2 -coated silicon cantilevers demonstrate abrupt curvature changes when their temperature is varied across the phase transition. Unlike the monotonic hysteresis phenomena observed in many other smart materials, the curvature– temperature hysteresis of VO2 actua...

Multiple moving cracks in an orthotropic strip sandwiched between two piezoelectric layers

In this paper, the solution of a moving Volterra-type screw dislocation in an orthotropic layer, bonded between two piezoelectric layers is obtained using complex Fourier transform. The dislocation solution is then employed as strain nuclei to derive singular integral equations for a medium weakened by multiple moving cracks. These equations, which are classified as, Cauchy singular equations, ...

Improving Power Density of Piezoelectric Vibration-Based Energy Scavengers

Vibration energy harvesting with piezoelectric materials currently generate up to 300 microwatts per cm2, using it to be mooted as an appropriate method of energy harvesting for powering low-power electronics. One of the important problems in bimorph piezoelectric energy harvesting is the generation of the highest power with the lowest weight. In this paper the effect of the shape and geometry ...
